Dead after 2 years August 19, 2010 S. Dugoni (San Francisco, CA) I won't buy again. Had to toss this one and I bought the HP 4014n B&W. Fast, quiet, cheaper toner. I can use my inkjet if I need color. Don't buy color laser unless you need color all the time. Toner costs are outrageous and toner wont last long even if only printing B&W because it draws from all the color toner cartridges.
Very dull muddy looking prints August 19, 2010 Wondurgurl (Toronto, ON) If you're looking for dull, lifeless prints with muddy colors, this is the printer for you. I've tried changing the setting on the printer to "vivid" and oversaturated my picture, but the color prints still come out looking like they've been washed in mud. I can see this printer being good for flyers. The duplex ability of the printer is really handy and the black and white printing is very good.
Excellent printer at a reasonable price August 11, 2010 Mike DeMaria_AMZ I run a small business and occasionally need color. The most important things to me are cost, crisp printing, and speed. This printer combines all 3. I purchased this printer to replace my Samsung CLP500 network color laser. It was a pig, constantly eating consumables. I finally had enough when a few months ago it complained that it was out of cyan toner - if I printed 100 pages of color that was a lot! I found all my cyan, and magenta, AND yellow toner in the 'waste toner bucket'. Every time the printer warmed up, it cycled the color toners, wasting them. Since it was a single drum machine, color printing was SLOW (think 4 pages a minute) This Brother printer does NOT waste toner, and the 4 drums (one for each color) mean SPEEDY color printing. What I really love about it is when I print straight black and white, which is 99% of the time. Where the Samsung ran the color developers even if you only printed black and white, the Brother does NOT. It is smart enough to know when to run what, saving money. The PDF manual is great, walking me through the procedure to clean one of the drums when I had a print quality problem (repeating mark). Network setup was easy. The duplex printing is also great (albeit a bit slow). Just like others have said, pop those levers in the back if you are going to be printing envelopes and LEAVE them that way. I had some bad wrinkles, and that fixed them in a jiffy. Regular printing is still AOK even with the levers in the envelope position. The only negative I have about the printer (and it's a VERY small one) is that the plastic feels a bit cheap and thin. All in all, a great purchase!
Great printer for casual color printing - horrible toner empty system April 28, 2010 Robert Thompson 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
While I don't write many reviews, I felt it was warranted in this case. I love this printer. It's my everyday general business use printer and it has worked fantastically. The color prints are great for the web pages I need printed, and many of my other uses. It was never intended (at least in my purchase) to produce beautiful photographic prints - however, it does do decent proofs. Now for my gripe. :) The toner measuring system that determines when a toner cartridge is empty has to be the worst thing ever developed. It determines that you need a new cartridge way before it's even close to streaking the printouts because of inadequate toner. Unfortunately, you need to jump through hopes to "trick" the printer into continuing with its existing toner cartridge. The trick entails pulling out the cartridge and covering the little "viewports" on each side of the cartridge with electrical tape and then resetting the toner life through the menu. It's easy to google the exact steps if needed. Maybe I'm just being cheap, but I've at least double the life of my cartridge by doing this. Would I recommend this printer. Sure would, but just be prepared to replace your cartridges prematurely or to do the above listed tricks (PIA, imo). Overall, not a bad printer for its price.
Good quality printing for a bargain price April 11, 2010 Tom (Oregon USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Got this a while back to replace an OkiData color laser printer that had a slightly flaky Windows XP driver, and a really flaky Windows 7 driver. The Brother HL-4040cdn has worked well with XP, Vista, and 64 bit Windows 7. Black and white print quality is good, and color, including photos, is OK. Comparable with other color laser printers I use. I have an Epson photo printer for printing photos, but this printer works well for contact sheets and other non-critical color images where I don't need top quality photo printing. In the Amazon reviews, some people have complained about the color quality of this printer, while others, such as myself, think it is acceptable. I have one application that prints color with a strong reddish tint. It prints OK with other color printers, and all other applications print OK with the Brother printer. For some reason this one application doesn't play well with the HL-4040cdn. There may be other applications like this which could explain the differing views on color print quality in the reviews.
