Best printer for the price August 30, 2010 fractor This is a really good printer for the price. I had a Samsung CLP315 before, which is in the same price range but HP beats the Samsung printer by an order of magnitude! The print quality of the HP is excellent. The setup is super easy, especially when used as a network printer. The printer features HPCL and Postscript so nearly every driver works and since the printer implements its own printing queue in the network, any device can just add this queue. No "oops my operating system updated itself and my printer doesn't work anymore". The only downsides are the printer is slow and sometimes starts to calibrate itself, making some noise. So don't buy it if you plan to print large volumes and don't put it in a room at home where you try to sleep.
Laser printer August 30, 2010 AlPal So far, an excellent printer. The toner cost freaks you out at first, $97 per color, but read on. First of all, the actual toner cost per copy is way down compared to an inkjet printer. Secondly, you never pay list price for anything on the internet. I see toner 4/color packs on Amazon for $100. My guess is that once you go to a laser printer, you'll never go back.

Perfect Personal Printer August 14, 2010 21st Century Hermit (Colorado) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Pros: * Amazing value * Single sheet feeder * Brain dead easy setup * Large finger recesses, bottom center, for lifting the big fella * Sharp text * ToolboxFX Utility * Compact footprint * USB & Ethernet * Nice organic shape Cons: * Dreadful case color choices, gray & black * Small paper tray, ~100 sheets * No custom paper size I got this to replace my 15-YO HP LasetJet 4P (Parallel Port) which was still performing like new. The 1518 was a re-certified unit for $125 delivered, amazing value! The 1518 is a little faster than the 4P for the first page, much faster for all subsequent pages. I'd been using a HP PhotoSmart AIO for my color printing, I'll still use it for CD printing. However, text printing on the 1518 is so much crisper that I can't go back. Still adjusting to the color difference, the ToolboxFX utility easily adjusts CMYK colors, but knowing which way to adjust is a work in progress for me. I tried the M -2, Y -1, as one reviewer suggested, it was not an improvement over the default. I ended up at M +1, Y -1 for the maps I print. The high cost per page for toner is a non-issue for me, but the priority single sheet feeder was a must, I print ~100 UPS adhesive labels per year. Having this caliber of printer for $125, more than justifies the high cost toner. HP has to make a profit somehow. Besides, Amazon has good deals on toner. The case colors make the 1518 look like death warmed over compared to the PhotoSmart's mostly beige case with the same gray. My LJ 4P held 1/2 ream of paper, so surprised at such a small tray on the 1518, particularly for a network printer. The good news, the paper tray is a breeze to remove and add paper. In addition to the adhesive UPS labels, I print my bank deposit slips on a 3.5 x 8.5" sheet of paper from an Excel spreadsheet. The 1518 does not have a custom paper size option and because it center feeds odd sizes, I could not just print on the left side of a letter sheet like I did on the LJ 4P. I ended up selecting a #10 envelope and marking the case for the position of the centering wings of the single sheet slot.
Great home network printer so far August 4, 2010 bob I've had this printer for about two weeks, and we've been using it occasionally, about once a day. The print quality is so much better than I had expected. It seems to take about a minute for the first page to come out, so judge for yourself how important that is. Setting it up on the network was very simple. I connected the printer's power and ethernet, let it do its initial automatic setup for a few minutes, and then gave it an IP address through the on-printer controls and it was ready. It was easy to set up on both Mac OSX Snow Leopard and Windows 7, with the drivers already included in each operating system. We did not try connecting via USB to either computer. Toner replacement will be expensive, as with any color laser printer. But I compared prices of many printers, and after two or more full toner replacement cycles (at the current Amazon prices), this printer comes out to be less expensive to maintain than any other networked multi-OS printer. If price is your primary concern and you're only using Windows, then you may want one of Dell's offerings. But for a network that includes Macs, I like this HP.
