I love this machine. So much so, that I've purchased 3 for my company for different locations. It works well. Toner is reasonable - I compared to the cost of at least one particular HP Color LaserJet and it was far less.
I love the fact that network scanning is so easy with this machine. That is the part that I like the most by far. <$1,000 for that kind of functionality is very good!
The price was great for both the product and I got free shipping!

This machine is not perfect on the print quality. But is a great multifunction machine for most needs. It will scan and print at the same time and the speed is pretty good, too. We really like the wireless function for our small office. It works very well for us. Would definitely recommend.

I have never written a review, don't have time, but this printer is so bad that I am taking the time to forewarn others. It has been a bottomless money pit! I bought this printer from Costco and recently went back to their website and wished I had taken time to read the reviews on it. They are all awful! Brother has set up this machine so that they can rob you blind buying toner after toner, and now, 1 1/2 yrs later I have to buy a drum. There is no option to over-ride the 'end of toner life'. Once it gets to a certain point, it will not allow you to do anything but go buy another toner and replace it. I had an HP that I could over-ride that feature and I could continue to use for drafts and such. Not the Brother! Problem is, that when it says it is the end of the toner, the last sheet that you print has all the colors and there is no fading or anything, so you know you could more than likely get quite a few more prints from it before it is totally out of tonor. You don't get the amount of prints they say you should - NO WAY! I had an HP Color Laster and 6 years later never have had to change the drum and I used it heavily back then. I spent $600 on this machine so I want to get my money's worth, but think I will get rid of it because Brother is making a killing on their toners! PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE! I'm going back to HP!

Everything about this printer has been great. I had installation problems with the scanning firmware, and it was unresolvable. I have Vista Ultimate x64. However the customer support was great, and I can still use the scan-to-usb feature. To be honest, this is probably the most hassle-free way to scan documents anyway.
The networkability is priceless. If you put the thing on wheels, you can put it in your fridge (if you really want to) without having to connect any cables other than the power cable.
Nice. Mine is not in my fridge, by the way.
Highly recommend.

I've been using a combination of an HP2600n color laser, a Samsung ML-2250 B&W laser, a Canon scanner, and a Fujitsu ScanSnap for a couple of years. The 2600n sucked toner like mad, the Samsung works fine but is black & white only, the ScanSnap wouldn't work with Vista x64 when I bought a new computer, and the Canon was strictly one image at a time.
I checked around a LOT for a single replacement for all this hardware, and couldn't be happier so far with my 9840 multifunction single machine replacement for all the other stuff. Installation was a snap under Vista x64 via a usb cable, and after a little fooling around with a Windows 7 portable, even my spouse is impressed with wireless printing. (Hint - I already had a WEP protected router, and needed to download a piece of software from brother (USBXPVISTA-64-C-US) to be able to use the "Add a Printer" selection in Windows 7, but all then went well).
For scanning the PaperPort light software worked fine, as does my OmniPage 17 software (not included with the printer), because Brother provides a real twain driver!
For faxing the machine works fine as well, scanning to internal memory and then sending electronically. It also provides for broadcast faxing, which is handy for multiple recipients. The only quirk is that if you want to use the machine together with a telephone answering machine on the same telephone line, you need to follow the instructions & daisychain the answering machine to the MFC Printer.
As for the printing, I'm in love. Postscript (for those of us who use multiple operating systems like Mac or Linux in addition to various flavors of Windows), 128 Mb of RAM which is plenty for even full color letter size pictures, and the print quality is sharp. Print speed is excellent; I don't know about 21 ppm, and there is the usual warm up lag common to network printing, but it is quite nice. Also for me, the ability to duplex and print 2 or 4 pages per page is very cool, and using these options doesn't seem to slow the printer down much.
The only real con I can think of is that the paper feed mechanism is picky about having the paper loaded 'just so' in the paper tray. I've had a few jams when not paying attention to this. On the other hand, it is relatively easy to clear paper jams, and the manual is actual useful.
All in all, an excellent choice for those of us with home offices and three or so different computer variously hooked together with cables and wireless.
